Manufacturing Director Recruitment

The Manufacturing Director leads the manufacturing strategy and all production, engineering, maintenance, and manufacturing improvement functions for a business or group, sitting on the board or senior leadership team with accountability for the full manufacturing P&L. Manufacturing Director appointments require candidates with both deep manufacturing operations credibility and the strategic capability to set investment direction, drive lean transformation, and represent manufacturing at executive level. YP Recruitment places Manufacturing Directors across automotive, aerospace, FMCG, precision engineering, and pharmaceutical businesses throughout the UK.

What the role involves

  • Setting the manufacturing strategy and capital investment plan, including site rationalisation, capacity expansion, and technology investment decisions
  • Leading all manufacturing functions including production, engineering, quality, and maintenance across sites or divisions, with full functional accountability
  • Delivering manufacturing performance targets across safety, quality, cost, and delivery, reporting against these to the board and MD
  • Driving lean transformation and manufacturing excellence programmes across the manufacturing network, targeting sustainable EBITDA improvement
  • Managing significant capital investment in manufacturing capability, including CAPEX appraisal, supplier selection, and project governance
  • Sitting on the senior leadership team and contributing to overall business strategy, particularly on manufacturing footprint, make vs buy, and product rationalisation decisions

Who employers are looking for

An engineering degree in manufacturing or mechanical engineering is the standard foundation. Lean and Six Sigma credentials at Black Belt or Master Black Belt level are expected, Manufacturing Directors who cannot demonstrate a structured lean transformation track record are at a significant disadvantage in most manufacturing appointment processes. The ability to show specific, quantified improvement in safety, quality, delivery, and cost through lean methodology is the practical test that boards apply.

A track record of leading large, complex manufacturing operations, ideally multi-site, multi-shift, with large workforces, is the operational requirement. P&L management across the full manufacturing function, not just cost centre accountability, is essential. Manufacturing Directors who have been responsible for manufacturing margin, not just manufacturing cost, are consistently prioritised.

NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent is expected given the health and safety leadership responsibility the role carries across large manufacturing operations. In automotive and aerospace, sector-specific methodology knowledge, VPS, APS, or equivalent production systems, is often a specific hiring requirement.
