Executive recruitment
Head of Manufacturing Recruitment
The Head of Manufacturing leads all manufacturing operations across a site or division, owning the safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance of the production function. Head of Manufacturing roles sit below Operations Director or Manufacturing Director in larger businesses, or carry equivalent scope in SMEs where a single senior leader manages the manufacturing function end to end. YP Recruitment places Heads of Manufacturing across precision engineering, automotive, aerospace, food, and pharmaceutical businesses throughout the UK.
What the role involves
- Leading manufacturing operations across production, engineering maintenance, and quality, with accountability for all manufacturing output across shifts running 24/5 or 24/7 in larger facilities
- Delivering manufacturing KPIs including safety incident rate, first-time quality, on-time delivery, and cost per unit against budget, with monthly performance reviews presented to the Operations Director or MD
- Managing the manufacturing management team, including Production Managers, Shift Managers, and Engineering Maintenance leads, typically across a direct and indirect workforce of 50 to 500 people depending on business scale
- Driving lean and continuous improvement programmes across all manufacturing processes, targeting waste reduction and efficiency gains
- Managing manufacturing capital expenditure, including equipment investment, facility improvements, and tooling projects
- Reporting manufacturing performance to the Operations Director or MD, including KPI dashboards, improvement plans, and risk escalation
Who employers are looking for
An engineering degree or equivalent, typically in manufacturing or mechanical engineering, is the standard expectation. Lean and Six Sigma credentials at Black Belt level are expected at this level in most manufacturing environments. Candidates without a formal improvement methodology qualification find it difficult to compete in businesses where lean transformation is a core requirement of the role.
Multi-shift manufacturing management experience is important. The Head of Manufacturing needs to have managed operations that run around the clock, understand how to structure shift management, and be comfortable with the people management complexity that comes with large, diverse manufacturing workforces. Candidates who have only managed day-shift or single-shift operations are typically not competitive for complex multi-shift roles.
NEBOSH General Certificate or Diploma is expected, reflecting the health and safety leadership responsibility the role carries. Budget management and P&L awareness are important supporting skills, even where the Head of Manufacturing is not the full P&L holder.
Boards and senior hiring managers at this level are increasingly focused on the candidate's ability to lead cultural change alongside process improvement. The technical credentials get you to the interview; the demonstration that you can build an engaged manufacturing workforce, drive sustainable improvement rather than short-term metric chasing, and develop the next tier of production leadership is what wins the appointment.
In automotive and aerospace supply chain environments, the Head of Manufacturing is expected to manage formal customer audits, present corrective action plans at supplier quality reviews, and maintain accreditations such as IATF 16949 or AS9100. This sector-specific governance experience differentiates an external candidate who has operated in a regulated supply chain from one who has not. In food and FMCG, BRC or retailer technical standard compliance carries the equivalent weight. Family-owned manufacturers tend to prioritise operational stability and workforce trust, while PE-backed businesses are typically looking for a Head of Manufacturing who can demonstrate measurable OEE improvement and cost reduction within a defined period. UK manufacturing demand for this profile consistently outpaces supply, particularly in the automotive Midlands corridor and the Yorkshire and North West precision engineering clusters.
Salary benchmarks
Automotive and aerospace Heads of Manufacturing earn above general manufacturing equivalents. Black Belt qualification adds 10-15% to market value at this level. Car allowance and performance bonus are standard.
