Technical sales salaries are typically structured as base plus commission or bonus. Base salaries range from £30,000-£40,000 at entry level to £55,000-£75,000 for senior sales managers. OTE (on-target earnings) adds 20-50% on top. Sales directors in engineering businesses earn £80,000-£120,000+ OTE.

It depends on the product complexity. Selling capital equipment, instrumentation, or complex systems usually requires an engineering degree or equivalent technical experience. Selling components, consumables, or distribution typically values commercial skills with enough technical understanding to hold credible conversations. The strongest candidates combine both.

Technical sales roles are distributed more evenly than pure engineering roles because they cover territories rather than fixed sites. The Midlands, North West, and Yorkshire have the highest concentration of engineering and manufacturing employers. Many roles are field-based with a home office, so location flexibility is common.
