M&E Coordinator Recruitment

The M&E Coordinator manages the on-site coordination of mechanical and electrical installations within construction projects, aligning subcontractor programmes, resolving design clashes, and ensuring M&E works integrate with the wider building structure. Working within main contracting on medium to large building projects, the M&E Coordinator is the practical link between the design engineer's M&E drawings and what actually gets installed on site. Demand for M&E Coordinators has grown with BIM adoption and the increasing complexity of building services systems. We recruit M&E Coordinators for main contractors across the UK, with salaries from £32,000 at entry level through to £65,000 and above at senior level.

What the role involves

  • Coordinating M&E subcontractor programmes and managing interfaces between mechanical, electrical, and other construction trades, ensuring ceiling void, riser, and plant room space allocations are agreed before first fix commences
  • Reviewing M&E drawings for spatial clashes with structural elements, architectural finishes, and other building services systems, using Navisworks to run clash detection reports and managing resolution with the relevant subcontractors and design engineers
  • Chairing M&E coordination meetings with subcontractors and the design team, tracking actions and resolving conflicts, and maintaining a live issues register that documents how each clash was resolved and who approved the solution
  • Managing BIM coordination and clash detection for M&E systems using Revit MEP and Navisworks
  • Reviewing and approving M&E subcontractor method statements, inspection and test plans, and O&M documentation
  • Monitoring M&E progress against programme and reporting status and risks to the Project Manager

Who employers are looking for

M&E Coordinators typically come from a mechanical or electrical engineering background, with an HNC, HND, or degree in building services, mechanical, or electrical engineering being the most common qualifications. Practical building services knowledge is essential: HVAC systems, pipework distribution, electrical containment, and lighting layouts must be understood in three dimensions to manage coordination effectively. A CSCS card appropriate to the engineering background is required for site access.

BIM coordination experience is increasingly a requirement rather than a desirable. Revit MEP for model review and Navisworks for clash detection are the standard tools, and employers expect candidates to work confidently within a federated BIM model. Mid-career M&E Coordinators are expected to have at least one full project cycle of experience from groundworks through to commissioning handover. Healthcare and data centre projects command a premium over standard commercial projects, reflecting the critical nature of M&E systems in those environments and the complexity of coordination requirements. London and South East roles carry a 15 - 20% premium over the national rate.

The M&E Coordinator role sits at the intersection of design and construction, and employers look for candidates who are equally comfortable in the BIM model and on the construction site. Those who have only worked in an office-based design coordination capacity sometimes struggle with the pace and practical problem-solving demands of a live construction site. Conversely, site-based candidates with strong practical knowledge but limited BIM experience increasingly find that ISO 19650-compliant information management is expected from day one on tier 1 contracts. The commissioning phase of the project is a particular differentiator: M&E Coordinators who have witnessed and supported systems commissioning and produced or reviewed O&M documentation understand the full lifecycle of their role in a way that makes them significantly more effective on complex healthcare or data centre projects.

Salary benchmarks

Graduate / entry-level £32,000 - £38,000
Mid-career (3 - 8 years) £38,000 - £52,000
Senior / management £52,000 - £65,000+

London and South East roles carry a 15 - 20% premium over national rates. Data centre and healthcare M&E coordinators earn above standard commercial project equivalents, reflecting the complexity and consequences of coordination failures. BIM coordination experience adds value at all levels and is increasingly a baseline expectation.

Industries that hire M&E Coordinators

  • Commercial construction: coordinating M&E on office, retail, and mixed-use projects where ceiling voids, risers, and plant rooms are highly contested spaces, and where coordination failures discovered during second fix are costly and programme-critical to resolve
  • Healthcare: complex clinical environment M&E coordination with strict HTM compliance requirements and critical system segregation, where the M&E Coordinator must understand infection control zone requirements and ensure M&E system routes do not compromise them
  • Education: school and university M&E installation coordination across phased projects often delivered within occupied campuses
  • Residential: coordinating M&E on large residential developments with repetitive floor plates and centralised plant systems
  • Data centres and critical environments: complex M&E coordination where power, cooling, and containment systems demand precise spatial management

Related roles

  • Building Services Engineer: produces the M&E design that the M&E Coordinator manages and coordinates on site
  • Construction Project Manager: the PM who oversees the M&E Coordinator and to whom M&E progress is reported
  • Design Manager: manages the overall design coordination process, working alongside the M&E Coordinator on BIM and clash resolution
  • Site Manager: manages day-to-day site operations and works closely with the M&E Coordinator on programme and trade interfaces
