General Manager Recruitment

A General Manager carries full P&L accountability for a specific business unit, site, or regional operation, leading a local management team and delivering the business plan within the wider group framework. General Manager roles are the most common entry point into senior leadership in manufacturing and engineering, offering genuine commercial accountability alongside operational scope. YP Recruitment places General Managers across manufacturers, engineering services businesses, construction contractors, and technical distribution companies throughout the UK.

What the role involves

  • Full P&L accountability for the business unit or site, including revenue, margin, cost, and cash generation against the business plan
  • Leading the local management team across operations, commercial, finance, and support functions, managing performance and development
  • Delivering business plan targets including revenue, margin, OTIF, safety, and operational efficiency KPIs
  • Managing local customer and supplier relationships, including key account management and commercial negotiations within delegated authority
  • Implementing group strategy at the local level, translating corporate priorities into operational plans and day-to-day management decisions
  • Developing talent and building local team culture, including succession planning and engagement within the business unit

Who employers are looking for

General Manager appointments draw from engineering, commercial, and operational management backgrounds, with the balance depending on the nature of the business unit. Manufacturing site GM roles typically favour candidates with production management or operations backgrounds who have moved progressively into commercial responsibility. Services and distribution GM roles favour candidates with stronger commercial or customer management backgrounds.

A track record of P&L management and team leadership is the headline requirement. Candidates who have managed cost centres rather than full profit and loss accounts will find it difficult to compete for these roles. The ability to demonstrate that you have owned a set of numbers, managed people across multiple functions, and navigated business challenges as the senior person on site is the defining differentiator.

Sector experience relevant to the business unit is important, a GM in an aerospace components plant needs to understand the regulatory and customer quality environment, while a GM in a construction contracting business needs commercial contracting experience. An MBA is beneficial, particularly for candidates targeting larger or more complex business units.
