Engineering Director Recruitment

The Engineering Director leads the technical heart of a manufacturing or engineering business, owning design, development, process engineering, and the long-term technical strategy. Engineering Director candidates must combine deep engineering credibility with the commercial acumen and communication skills to operate at board level. YP Recruitment places Engineering Directors across aerospace, capital equipment, automotive, and industrial manufacturing businesses throughout the UK.

What the role involves

  • Setting the engineering strategy and technical roadmap for the business, aligned to commercial objectives and customer requirements, typically covering a 3-5 year horizon with annual investment plans approved at board level
  • Leading engineering teams across design, development, and process engineering functions, with budget accountability for the function, including headcount planning for teams ranging from 20 to 200+ engineers depending on business scale
  • Managing engineering capital investment: tooling, equipment, software, and technical infrastructure, including building the business case for CAPEX approval and managing projects from procurement through to commissioning
  • Driving new product development and technology improvement programmes from concept through to production release
  • Ensuring technical compliance across product safety, regulatory approvals, and intellectual property protection
  • Building engineering capability and the talent pipeline, from graduate recruitment through to principal engineer development

Who employers are looking for

A BEng or MEng in a relevant engineering discipline is the standard entry requirement, and CEng chartership is valued, particularly in aerospace, defence, and regulated manufacturing environments where the Engineering Director is the signatory on critical technical decisions. Candidates without chartered status are regularly considered where their operational track record is strong, but the premium for CEng engineers at this level is consistent.

Programme and project delivery experience is important. Engineering Directors in capital equipment and aerospace environments will typically have managed multi-year development programmes with formal governance, stage gate processes, and cross-functional team leadership. Budget management is a baseline expectation, not an optional extra.

The ability to translate complex technical matters for non-technical stakeholders, including the MD, the board, and investors, is a capability gap that rules out otherwise technically strong candidates. Engineering Directors who can build a compelling business case for technical investment, and present technical risk clearly at board level, are consistently in the shortest supply.

Boards and executive search processes at this level are specifically testing for the Engineering Director's ability to set a multi-year technical roadmap and defend it commercially. An internal promotion from Head of Engineering may have excellent operational credibility, but the external candidate who has navigated a board-level capital approval process for a major development programme will carry more weight when the business is entering a significant investment cycle.

In PE-backed manufacturing businesses, the Engineering Director is expected to quantify the return on engineering investment, not just advocate for it technically. In family-owned businesses, the emphasis shifts towards stability, continuity of technical knowledge, and the ability to manage long-standing customer relationships at a technical level. Listed businesses and defence primes place the greatest weight on formal governance, design authority credentials, and compliance with regulatory frameworks. The UK market for Engineering Directors with both deep sector expertise and board-level presence is consistently tight, particularly in aerospace, capital equipment, and industrial automation.

Industries that hire Engineering Directors

  • Manufacturing: leading engineering, design, and technical functions across a product manufacturing business, often with joint accountability for process improvement and new product introduction alongside the Operations Director
  • Aerospace and defence: leading engineering programme management and product development for complex platform programmes, with formal design authority responsibilities and configuration management accountability
  • Capital equipment: leading the design and technical development of bespoke industrial and process equipment, managing projects from customer specification through to factory acceptance testing and site commissioning
  • Automotive: heading engineering for vehicle systems, powertrain, or component development programmes
  • Technology: leading hardware, embedded systems, or industrial electronics engineering teams

Related roles

  • Technical Director: often a peer or alternative title at similar seniority, typically with broader technology strategy scope including R&D and IP
  • Operations Director: the most common line management relationship for an Engineering Director in a manufacturing business
  • Head of Engineering: the level below Engineering Director, often the internal promotion route to the Director appointment
  • Managing Director: Engineering Directors with strong commercial development and P&L experience are well positioned for MD progression
