Who employers are looking for

A degree in a relevant discipline is the standard entry qualification, Food Technology or food science for food and FMCG roles, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering for formulation-based manufacturers, and relevant engineering qualifications for industrial product development roles. The specific degree matters less than depth of understanding in the relevant product domain; NPD managers who cannot converse credibly about the technical constraints of their product category struggle in cross-functional settings.

Project management qualifications, Prince2, PMQ, or APM, are increasingly expected as NPD becomes more formally managed in larger manufacturers. Stage-gate process experience is a standard requirement. Regulatory awareness relevant to the sector is essential: FSA nutrition and labelling regulations for food, REACH for chemical formulations, CE or UKCA marking for industrial products. Commercial acumen is equally important, NPD managers need to understand margin, pricing, and cost of goods alongside the technical development programme.

Senior NPD managers who have built and led NPD teams, managed portfolios of 10 or more concurrent projects, and can demonstrate commercial successes, products launched on time, products that achieved targeted gross margin, products that won new customers, command the upper salary bands and typically consider multiple opportunities simultaneously.
